What are African Braids, or African Braiding Hairstyles?

Many of us, when hear the word braids, probably remember the childhood and little girls with nice braided hair. Indeed, african braids and african braiding hairstyles are similar to that girly two braids, at least in the technique of making braids, which is almost the same as that which we saw in the childhood.The difference is the quantity and volume of the braids.

So, what are african braids? With raising popularity of african fashion in clothing, jewelry and music, its became incredibly popular to have african braids, which have already become a hit in the European, American and other art of hairdressing! There are different kinds of braiding: different colors, starting with natural and ending with blue or green, and lengths and a variety of braiding hairstyles.

You just have to decide how many braids should be on your head, and which color they should be of.  


African braids can be braided with the tips or with a living tip with a little tail at the end, which can be curly. You can have curly african braids, or braids without using the synthetic materials, and can be short.

Hair Braiding History

The country of origin of the african braids and african hair braiding styles, as implies the name, is Africa. The first masters of  making African braids were the ancient egyptians. Around 5000 years ago, numerous micro braids were at the peak of popularity among the people of Egypt. Pharaones, goddesses and people of the high status had such hair styles.



To some extent african braids were related with hot weather, because in the heat the braids were very comfortable. But it's not just the climate! Additionally, braids were the sign of status of the egyptian, and the length of dreadlocks or braids was the important indicator: the longer the braids, the higher the status. Even at those ancient times, braids were not created on the basis of own hair only: the animal wool and vegetable fibers were added to design the braids.


In our time, long braids are available not only to egytpian pharaohs and not onlty to african people, as African braids hair styles are fashionable, unique, original, spectacular and glamor. This hairstyle is for those, who are tired of the usual style, who is not afraid to improvise, try new things and who likes to be in a centre of attention. The african braids are being done with the help of different synthetic materials, such as kanekalon, or other.
